Bloody Mary, from singer Lady Gaga’s 2011 album, Born This Way, is an eerie electro pop song about the biblical figure, Mary Magdalene. The title, Bloody Mary, however, doesn’t refer to the figure but rather a Rolls Royce of Gaga’s, named Bloody Mary. Gaga, who had a Catholic upbringing, was always taught to pray to masculine gods, stated that she found it easier to worship a “more feminine force” and instead prayed to Mary Magdalene (Mother Mary), who she likened to her late aunt. To her, biblical representation of women was usually negative on purpose, and she wrote Born This Way’s track list (that notably makes multiple biblical references and builds up women) to share her experiences. The song is from Mary’s point of view, as she sings about still being able to live her life without a man, saying “when you’re gone, I’ll still be Bloody Mary”.
