Censorship

Censorship

Akira Buske, Student Editor

What is the definition of censorship?

The definition of censorship is the suppression or limitation of any books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security. In our (The Tomahawk News Teams) case, it is limitations on what we can speak about on The Tomahawk.

Why does censorship exist?

Censorship can occur for multiple reasons – mostly to protect those viewing the source of media from danger, hate speech, or other situations that can make someone vulnerable.

What are/should be our expectations on censorship?

As an outsider you more than likely think that the Tomahawk News Team is limited to only saying things that aren’t prejudice, an endangerment to someone’s mental health, a threat, or inappropriate for school. This is not the case. We, as a whole, are limited to a very small number of topics. Testing the limits of censorship could lead to us shutting down entirely.

Why Should You Care?

It is important that our topics expand so we can give you, our readers, the best and most accurate news possible. If we have restrictions on what we can and cannot share with you, it’s more difficult to give you the most accurate news. It is an obstacle we must overcome in order to speak on the changes and improvements that could be made with YOUR support.
