GAP opened its first store on August 21, 1969, in San Francisco California, founded by Donald and Doris Fisher. The original store sold Levi’s jeans and records to attract teenage customers and initially sold only Levi’s jeans to solve Donald’s difficulty finding jeans that fit. The name “GAP” was chosen to represent bridging the “generation gap” of the era, and the company went public in 1976. It has since expanded into a global corporation with multiple brands and product lines. GAP clothes are known for being classic, comfortable basics like jeans, t-shirts, and sweaters, though they also offer more modern pieces and special collections.
