‘I’ve never seen anything like this’: New from Smyrna Beach, Fl.

October 6, 2022
Near Orlando, Fl. on Smyrna Beach “We have no plumbing right now,” said resident Robert Dailey.
While the water did not get into Dailey’s home, it drowned everything underneath and destroyed his plumbing and air conditioning unit. This caused Dailey to buy five new air conditioning window units on Tuesday. Dailey said he has never seen anything like this.
“We were terrified at one point,” he said. “In all the hurricanes I’ve been through, I see these people getting evacuated ‘cause of a flood. And I always thought, that wasn’t me. I’d never be that. And you just don’t know where it’s going to flood so it ends up being you.”
Although some very lucky residents didn’t see water in their homes, the residents that did have flooding in the home are having to face severe destruction inside.
Resident Bill Mudge, said “We had 18 inches of water in the house…“And in August, we dropped the flood insurance because, ‘we won’t need that. It’s never going to flood here.” Now, it is all hands on deck cleaning up the dirt and ripping up the floors after Hurricane Ian flooded the home that the Mudges spent nearly 30 years building
“I’m 67. He’s 77. And this is not something we wanted to do in retirement,” said Barbara Mudge. Now, they are counting their blessings and holding onto their faith as they move forward.
