African elephants are the largest land animals. Adult male elephants usually weigh up to 11,500 to 15,200 pounds and can sometimes even reach up to 24,000 pounds. Adult female elephants are smaller, and they can weigh 5,700 and 7,700 pounds. African elephants are herbivores that eat a variety of plants including grasses, leaves, bark, twigs, roots, and fruits. Elephants drink between 20-50 gallons a day. Elephants can live around 60 to 70 years. Elephants are highly intelligent and have advanced problem solving skills, complex social behavior, empathy, and excellent memory.
