Gordon Central High School senior Seth Kolterman has been named the STAR Student for the Class of 2026, an honor recognizing academic excellence and achievement. Kolterman selected Mrs. Shannon Rainwater as his STAR Teacher, crediting her with having a significant impact on his academic success.
The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, founded in 1958 by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE), honors Georgia’s highest-achieving high school seniors and the teachers who have played a key role in their academic development. To qualify, students must be graduating seniors, score the highest on a single SAT test date in their school and rank in the top 10 percent of their class based on grade point average.
Kolterman recently shared insight into how he earned this distinction during an interview. When asked about his study habits and SAT preparation, he admitted with humor, “I never actually studied, but before each of the two tests I took, I did three of the Bluebook practice tests to get familiar with the question structure of the SAT.”
When asked to offer advice to students preparing for upcoming SAT exams, Kolterman emphasized efficiency. “If you are going to study, don’t waste your time,” he said. He explained that his most effective method was taking practice tests, identifying strengths and weaknesses and focusing study time on areas that needed improvement.
Kolterman also discussed the importance of balance while preparing academically. When asked how he takes his mind off studying, he said tennis plays an important role. “It’s relaxing and completely takes my mind off of everything that isn’t tennis for a couple hours,” Kolterman said.
Looking ahead, Kolterman plans to pursue a military academy education, with aspirations of attending the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs or the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in New York. He cited free tuition, a top-tier education and a guaranteed military career after graduation as reasons for his interest. His goals reflect a strong commitment to both academic excellence and service.
Kolterman chose Mrs. Rainwater as his STAR Teacher because of the lasting impact she has had on his education, particularly in literacy and writing. He said she helped him become “the best writer possible” and added that she is “just a fantastic person.”
As Gordon Central celebrates this year’s STAR Student and Teacher, Kolterman’s achievement highlights the value of dedication, thoughtful preparation and strong mentorship—qualities that will continue to guide him in his future endeavors.
