Not For Radio is the solo project of María Zardoya, the lead singer of The Marías. The project was created as a more experimental and emotionally exploratory space for Zardoya, separate from the band’s polished indie-pop sound. Not For Radio’s debut album, Melt, serves as a deeply personal body of work, allowing Zardoya to explore vulnerability and introspection more freely.

“Vueltas,” a track from Melt, carries a melancholic and reflective tone as Zardoya dives into her emotions during a moment of raw vulnerability. The song centers on her struggle to escape the lingering thoughts of someone she feels unable to let go of. The word vueltas, which translates to “turns” or “circles,” reflects this emotional loop. She sings, “y tú das vueltas en mi mente, y yo rezando que me sueltes,” or, “you keep spinning in my mind, and I’m praying that you’ll let me go.”

Throughout the song, Zardoya highlights the fear that often accompanies love, and the tension between emotional openness and self-protection. This conflict is captured in the line “corazón, corazón, coraza,” meaning “heart, heart, armor,” which emphasizes the desire to love deeply while guarding oneself from pain.

As the song progresses, the tone shifts toward self-acceptance and healing. Zardoya turns inward, suggesting growth and the beginning of emotional release. The song’s intimate and reflective nature offers listeners a glimpse into her inner world, shaped by personal change and emotional processing. In doing so, “Vueltas” resonates beyond Zardoya’s experience, reflecting a universal struggle to move on and learn self-love.

Raw and confessional, “Vueltas” stands apart from the highly produced, radio driven music common today. Instead, it invites listeners into a quiet, emotional space,  one rooted in honesty, vulnerability and reflection.
