For What It’s Worth

A Protest Song That Still Speaks to Today’s Unrest
For What It’s Worth

“For What It’s Worth” was released as a single in December 1966 by Buffalo Springfield, arriving at the height of the 1960s counterculture movement. Written by Stephen Stills, the song was inspired not by the Vietnam War, as is often assumed, but by the Sunset Strip curfews in Los Angeles, which restricted young people from gathering at clubs and music venues. The crackdown led to clashes between youth and police, capturing a growing sense of tension between authority and a generation eager to be heard.

That frustration is reflected in the lyric, “Young people speaking their minds, getting so much resistance from behind,” a line that would soon resonate far beyond its original context.

Although rooted in a local event, the protest rock song gained widespread popularity in the years that followed, as its message closely mirrored the nation’s increasingly controversial decision to enter the Vietnam War. What began as a commentary on domestic unrest evolved into an anthem for a generation, particularly for young Americans being drafted and sent overseas, many feeling abandoned by their government.

Lines throughout the song, such as “Paranoia strikes deep, into your life it will creep,” and “Step out of line, the man come and take you away,” struck a deep chord with antiwar protesters, capturing the fear, distrust and uncertainty that defined the era.

Today, “For What It’s Worth” continues to stand the test of time, not only because of its instantly recognizable guitar riff, but because of its enduring message. Many listeners compare the song’s opening line,  “There’s something happening here, but what it is ain’t exactly clear” to modern social and political tensions. The lyric reflects a feeling of confusion and unease that many argue still defines the cultural climate today, proving that the song’s quiet warning remains as relevant now as it was nearly six decades ago.
