William Stevenson, 77, the first husband of former first lady Jill Biden, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his current wife, Linda Stevenson, 64, authorities said.
Police responded to a reported domestic disturbance at the couple’s residence around 11 p.m. on Dec. 28, 2025. Upon entering the home, officers found a woman unresponsive in the living room, according to law enforcement officials. Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead in the early morning hours of Dec. 29.
Stevenson was arrested in connection with the incident and charged with first-degree murder. He remains in jail after failing to post bail, which was set at $500,000, during a court appearance the Monday following his arrest, authorities confirmed.
Jill Biden was married to Stevenson from 1970 to 1975. Following their divorce, she married then-Sen. Joe Biden in 1977. As of publication, Mrs. Biden has not publicly commented on the case.
Linda Stevenson, born April 29, 1961, was remembered as a devoted family woman who ran a bookkeeping business, according to her obituary. She was known for her love of Outback Steakhouse and was an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan. She is survived by her daughter, Christina, and her granddaughter, Ciara.
The investigation remains ongoing.
