Valentine’s Day Traditions

Ancient Valentine's Day rituals were not always romantic.
Ancient Valentine’s Day rituals were not always romantic.

On February 14th, everybody wakes up to a day full of hearts, chocolates, and flowers. Upcoming this month is none other than the holiday every couple loves, Valentines Day. A holiday to look forward to yearly, full of chocolates, stuffed animals, flowers, and a special kind of love. Even if you’re not in a relationship, Valentines Day can be a fun day for you and friends or family. Buy the people you love a gift or two to show them your love and appreciation for them.

What is the origin of Valentine’s Day, though? Valentine’s Day was originally considered an Ancient Roman feast called Lupercalia, lasting through February 13-15. Valentine’s Day, otherwise known as Lupercalia, was not always chocolates and a sweet day with your loved ones, the original tale of Valentine’s Day is creepy compared to what the holiday is now. During this festival, priests would sacrifice a goat and dip strips of their hide in blood and whip the women. Though, this was done in good intention, as it was believed this tradition would help the women bare children in the upcoming year.

Thankfully, this year you don’t have to be whipped with blood-soaked goat strips or watch women be whipped, it’s a new era, and a box of chocolates and a bouquet of flowers will be good enough. Or, give them a gift that will last forever! Sales ending February 10, forever flowers are being sold for prices ranging $2-3. Tulips are $3 for any color, sunflowers are $3, and lavender is $2. Made of fuzzy pipe cleaners and turned into beautiful flowers, these flowers will never rot, making a beautiful permanent and sweet gift for the ones you love.
