Eric Dane

“Walk tall. All you can do is be brave enough to get out there. You fought. You loved. You lost. Walk tall.” -Mark Sloan, Grey’s Anatomy

Eric Dane, a well-known man in the acting industry, passed away on February 19, 2026. Popular in media such as Grey’s Anatomy, Euphoria, Bad Boys and many other shows and movies, Eric Dane lived a long life on the screen. In late months of 2023, he reported weakness in his hand, though originally passed it off as over-usage of texting. However, the weakness in his hand only grew worse, and he eventually sought healthcare to inspect the issue. He sought a hand specialist, who referred him to another specialist, who referred him to a neurologist, who recommended him to another neurologist and told him his issue was way out of his pay grade. After nine months of searching for answers in one office after another, he eventually got his diagnosis of ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Eric Dane leaves behind a wife and two kids, as well as many friends and a legacy on screen.

Eric William Melvin was born on November 9th, 1972, in San Francisco, California to William Melvin and Leah Dane. He was raised in Jewish faith from their mother, and had a bar mitzvah ceremony when he was of age. When he was seven, he lost his father to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Throughout high school, he was an athlete in the boys’ water polo team, but eventually made the decision to pursue acting after being in a school production of All My Sons.

In 1993, Eric moved to Los Angeles, soft launching his career in small roles in shows like Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, Roseanne, Married… with Children, and others. His first big film feature was in The Basket, followed by Zoe, Jack & Jane, X-Men: The Last Stans, and various other films. His biggest role, however, started when he starred in the second season of the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy as Doctor Mark Sloan. The fan base responded with a lot of positive responses to the new character, renewing him for another season, and many more. Unfortunately, Eric left the show in season 9 in 2012 due to financial limitations, as well as a large struggle with addiction to alcohol, resulting in ABC letting him go.

Although Eric is gone, his memory will never leave, as we can always rerun the movies and shows he starred in, and see his face one more time.
