Teen Depression

Signs students should know
Teen Depression

Many teenagers deal with stress from school, friends, and everyday life. However, sometimes those feelings can turn into something more serious. Depression is a mental health issue that affects many teens, and the warning signs are not always easy to notice.

One common sign is losing interest in activities a student used to enjoy. For example, a teen who loved sports, music, or art may suddenly stop participating. They may say they are tired or that they just don’t feel like doing those things anymore.

Another sign is pulling away from friends and family. A teen with depression might spend more time alone and avoid hanging out with others. Friends may notice that the person realms less or does not seem as interested in conversation.

Changes in sleep and energy can also happen. Some teens may sleep much more then usual but still feel tired. Others may have trouble sleeping at night. Teachers might notice that these students look exhausted in classes or struggle to focus on their work.

Depression can also affect school performance. A student who normally does well might start missing assignments or turning work in late. This is not always because they do not care. Sometimes it is because their feelings make it hard to concentrate or stay motivated.

Mood changes are another important sign. A teem with depression may seem sad, hopeless, or easily irritated. Small problems might suddenly feel very overwhelming to them.

Understanding these signs is important because it can help teens support each other and or get the help needed. If someone notices these changes in themselves or a friend, talking to a trusted adult —such as a parent, teacher, or school counselor— can help them get the support they need. Never feel like there is nobody who will listen, I assure you there will always be at least one person who cares enough to listen.

Depression is a real challenge, but with support and understanding teens can learn ways to manage their feelings and start feeling better overtime. Nobody should have to go through something like depression alone. Trust me, don’t let it get very bad.
