Dinosaurs may have gone extinct millions of years ago, but they are still one of the most interesting topics in science today. From their massive size to their strange features, dinosaurs continue to surprise scientists —and students— everyday.

One fun face is that not all dinosaurs were giant. While some, like long neck plant eaters, could grow as long as a school bus, others were as small as a chicken. In fact, many small dinosaurs have feathers, which has led scientists to believe that modern birds are actually related to dinosaurs. So in a way, dinosaurs are still alive today.

Another interesting fact is that dinosaurs lived on every continent, even Antartica. Back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, the continents were connected in one supercontinent called Pangaea. This made it easier for dinosaurs to spread out all over the world.

Dinosaurs also had some unique defenses. Some had sharp teeth and claws to hunt, while others had armor, spikes, or horns to protect themselves. For example, some plant-eater dinosaurs used their tails like weapons to fight off predators.

You might think all dinosaurs were scary, but many were peaceful plant eaters. These herbivores spent most of their time…well eating plants and avoiding danger. On the other hand, carnivores hunted for food, making them the predators of their time.

One of the biggest mysteries about dinosaurs is what caused their extinction. Most scientists believe it was the massive asteroid that hit Earth about 66million years ago, causing major climate changes that dinosaurs couldn’t survive.

Even though dinosaurs are gone, their fossils help us learn about life long ago. Paleontologists, or scientists who study fossils, are still discovering new species and facts every year.

Dinosaurs remind us that Earth has a long and fascinating history. Who knows what other secrets are still waiting to be uncovered.
