There’s a train coming into the station on March 27 with the opening of Gordon Central’s spring musical Hadestown: Teen Edition. After four weeks of intense rehearsals and preparation, the cast is putting the finishing touches on the show.

The show will run at 7 p.m. on March 27, 28 and 30, with a matinee on the 29 at 3 p.m.

Synopsis

Hadestown is a musical retelling of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, written and composed by Anaïs Mitchell. Set in the Great Depression, this musical combines elements of classic American folk music with New Orleans jazz. The plot revolves around two intertwined love stories. We have the young lovers, Orpheus and Eurydice, and the deteriorating marriage of King Hades and Lady Persephone.

The Cast

  • Orpheus: A young, naive poet. He has almost nothing to his name, save for his incredible talent for music and the song he’s been working on. When he falls head-over-heels for Eurydice, he hesitantly sings it at her request. It isn’t finished yet, but he believes it will bring Spring back once it’s done. Played by Asher Lee.
  • Eurydice: A hungry young girl, always on the run from the wind. She’s seen the unforgiving cruelty of the world. The Fates follow her like storm clouds, always whispering in the back of her mind. It isn’t until she meets Orpheus that she starts letting the walls around her heart fall away. Played by Riley McEntire.
  • Hades: The boss-king of the aptly named Hadestown. He and his wife, once deeply in love, have grown apart. Every year when she left for the surface, he grew more bitter and jealous. He began keeping her in the Underworld longer, then summoning her back sooner. He clings desperately to what remains of his strained marriage, disregarding everyone else. Played by Peyton Yarbrough.
  • Persephone: Tired of Hades’s controlling behavior, Persephone decides to drown her sorrows in wine. She’s come to resent the Underground, trying to escape the cycle—however, her attempts only serve to prolong the shared misery of herself and Hades. Played by Isabella Miettunen.
  • Hermes: The messenger god himself, Hermes acts as the narrator throughout the show, often breaking the fourth wall to address the audience directly. He took Orpheus under his wing out of obligation to Orpheus’s mother, a Muse who’d been a friend of Hermes. Played by Anna Caroline Parker.
  • The Fates: Three vicious sisters who control fate itself. They serve as the Greek chorus of Hadestown, trailing after the other characters and giving a voice to their doubts and insecurities. Played by Cecelia Kolterman, Logan Johnson and Emily Demain.
  • Workers: The ensemble, filling out the world of Hadestown and bringing the show to life. Played by Samantha Bigwood, Jenna Baker, Charity Dawson, Leyla Hemby, Sofia Aguilar, Harrison Hughes, Warren Worley, Kylie Bradshaw, Levi Martin and Eddy Garcia.
