The History of Pop-Tarts

The History of Pop-Tarts

Pop-tarts, the fast easy breakfast choice, have been around for sixty-one years. There are over 25 standard flavors with more then 100 different variations. The most popular being Frosted Strawberry and Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon.

In the early 1960, Kellogg’s (food manufacturing company) wanted a product to compete with the shifting breakfast landscape. Bill post (1927-2024) led the team that invented the toaster pastry in 1964. The biggest challenge was sealing the filling between the dough without it spilling during roasting. He brought home daily samples to her children for tasting testing. The team finished in just four months, originally calling them “Fruit Scones.”

The original pop tart was released was unfrosted, but in 1967 Posts experimented with frosting, proving it would not melt in the toaster. The original four flavor were strawberry, blueberry, brown sugar cinnamon, and apple-currant. The Kellogg Company owned pop tarts since 1964-2023, until Mars inc took over Kellogg. Pop tarts brought in 1 billion in annual net sales by 2024.
