As we all know, the month of February is coming up and a lot of people love but also hate the month of February. February is the month of love and the reasoning for that is because of the holiday that we call Valentine’s Day. Some people hate this holiday because they do not have a partner to celebrate with. A lot of people think of couples and partners when they think of Valentines Day, and that is because of its history.
On the 14th day of February, a man named St. Valentine helped make this ordinary day into something that would not be forgotten for years to come. Many legends started in the ancient time of how Valentine’s Day started; the most popular one, though, was about a man named Emperor Claudius the second had banned getting soldiers married even if they were in love. Thanks to Valentine’s actions, he married the young lovers in secret. When Claudius found out, he ordered Valentine to be sentenced to death. Later he was beheaded by Claudius outside of Rome.
It was not until the Middle Ages that the day was associated with love. In France and England, it was believed that February was the start of birds’ mating season which added to the idea that that Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance. Geoffrey Chaucer, an English poet, was the first to record St. Valentine’s Day as a day of romantic celebration.
Another popular thing that people see on Valentine’s day is Cupid. Cupid is a naked cherub that launches arrows of love at unsuspecting lovers. Cupid is believed to be the Greek god of love – Eros. Eros is a handsome immortal who played with emotions. He uses golden arrows to incite love. He did not get portrayed as the mischievous, chubby child that they put on Valentine’s Day cards until the Hellenistic period.
In conclusion, Valentine’s Day has been a well-known holiday for some time now and is a very important, well-known tradition all around the world.
