Today on April 30, in 1789, the first president of the United States took an oath of office in New York. If you didn’t already know the first president was George Washington. This oath swore “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” This was an important time for people considering that the first president of the United States was swearing to protect the state.
