On January 29th, an American Airlines flight with 60 passengers and four crew members, collided midair with an Army Black Hawk helicopter carrying three soldiers near Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. The plane crashed into the Potomac River last Wednesday night. Officials have confirmed that everyone on both aircrafts have perished. By 5:30 p.m. ET, a law enforcement source told CBS News that at least 40 bodies have been recovered. The plane had taken off from Wichita, Kansas, and was approaching for landing when the collision occurred. The helicopter was on a training flight with a crew based at Fort Belvoir in Virginia.
NTSB confirmed that the plane’s black boxes have been recovered. Its also confirmed that top figure skaters from the United States and Russia were on board. The Chinese Embassy in the U.S. said that two Chinese nationals were on the American Airlines flight but didn’t offer any further details. A source says that 14 plane victims are still believed to be missing. The recovery efforts have been suspended last Friday morning after first responders recovered at least eight bodies on Thursday night last week.
