Many republicans have been praising Trump and relying on him for his benefits to our countries’ economy. However, as of now he seems to be doing the opposite.
Following his tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports — 25% on all goods from Canada and Mexico, 10% on Canadian oil and China’s imports — our two bordering countries’ have responded with retaliation of said tariffs. Canada has issued 25% tariffs on American imports worth $20 billion USD.
These tariffs affect: beverages, make-up products and other cosmetic items, and paper products. A second list containing more every day items has been formed, but not yet put into place. The second list contains: vehicles — including trucks — steel and aluminum, specified fruits and vegetables, beef, pork, and other dairy products. Canadian and Mexican officials have communicated and agreed to band together after Trump’s actions, but the tariff responses have not been coordinated between the two.
Canadian citizens are moving towards boycotting American products, and some companies, not selling American products at all. During the next following weeks or months, prices of gas and groceries could skyrocket. America could lose most access to imported goods and items perceived as nicer every day items could turn expensive.
These tariffs could also affect factory workers in Mexico, making the unemployment rate rise. However, these tariffs seem to have a negative effect heavier on America than their intended recipients. Put in place for slight American benefit: less immigrants and less illegal or fatal drugs crossing the border. Instead, gasoline and grocery prices along with cars or any luxuries will cost twice more than the ideal. Most likely leaving the economy in an extremely harsh state, already considering we are currently in an economic depression quite like The Great Depression.
