- The morning of February 7 at a beach on Providenciales, a shark attacked a 55-year-old Canadian tourist as she tried taking a picture in the Turks and Caicos Islands, which is located above the islands Haiti and Dominican Republic. The victim was brought to shore and rushed to the Cheshire Hall Medical Center for treatment. In a press statement that was posted on social media, the Caribbean territory’s environmental department said that the tourist attempted to engage with the animal from the shallows in an attempt to take a picture.
The shark was estimated to be about 6ft in length, however the species has not been confirmed. There are about 30 different kinds of sharks in the Caribbean part of the ocean. According to the International Shark Attack File, there were only 3 recorded shark attacks in Turks and Caicos between the years 1749 and 2024. Meanwhile, the Bahamas recorded 33 in that period of time. One of those attacks occurred just two years ago. In 2023, when a shark bit an American woman snorkeling, she lost her leg in that attack.
