Did you know paleontologists discovered a new dinosaur? The Joaquinraptor Casali, named after one of the paleontologist’s kids, Joaquin Ibiricu, who died young.
Lucio Ibiricu and his team discovered this dinosaur in Argentina with a prehistoric crocodile leg in its mouth. This thing was massive – like 23 feet long and weighed around 2,200 pounds. It had “huge, powerful claws,” as stated by Ibiricu. These claws were great for capturing prey, pretty much a total killing machine.
Since it was found in Argentina, it did not have to compete with the Tyrannosaurus rex, or T-Rex. The Joaquinraptor is what is known as a “mega-raptor.” Basically just a huge version of a regular raptor – that’s where the name comes from. They think it probably lived in South America, Australia, and maybe even parts of Asia. That makes sense when you take how similar the climates back then.
This specific Raptor was 19 years old when it was killed, not entirely grown. It has been dead for 66-70 million years. From what I read, this fossil helped scientists understand some stuff they did not know before, though I am not exactly sure what those were.
