The ethics of AI has been a discussion among many professionals, teachers, students, and artists. The rapid development in artificial intelligence has led to questions about its integrity and reliability. AI is a tool that could be used to assist, catch mistakes, and help explain complex systems. However, there is a potential of embed biased and even more concerning, contributing to climate degradation. This merely scratches the surface of the reoccurring issues with the usage and development of AI.
There have been continuous worries with artists, and the use of AI art. Artificial intelligence is often trained to compile massive amounts of images and original artwork from the internet to generate the prompt given. Which means, AI steals the labor from an artist’s work and generates something completely different. Not only is the artist not compensated but stolen from. It is unethical, unfair, and should be considered illegal.
Teachers and students alike are aware of the usage of ChatGPT. There are numerous conversations around the idea of AI in classrooms. Some teachers believe there is no harm in using AI, specifically in writing, as a guide to brainstorm. Others believe that it has become a crutch in areas that originality is imperative. Leila Wheless is a North Carolina teacher who has been working since 1991. She states she tried to keep “an open heart” about the usage of AI in the classroom, according to The New York Times. For one of the assignments, Wheless was extremely disappointed in the results of her students using AI. Wheless shares to writer Jessica Grose that, “Gave students jewels such as “the Christian prophet got chocolate stains out of T-shirts.” Wheless further states, “They did not come up to me and ask “Is that correct? Moses is known for getting chocolate stains out of T-shirts?” They simply do not have the background knowledge or indeed the intellectual stamina to question unlikely responses.” This once again brings up the reliability of AI.
AI remains to be constantly tested, changing, and adapting. The importance lies with the ethical guardrails of AI, and how to properly regulate its use.
