The Devil Went Down to Georgia is a song by The Charlie Daniels Band. It is a country and southern rock song based upon a 1925 poem called The Mountain Whippoorwill. This song is unique in that the lyrics are spoken rather than sung. The track is about The Devil coming to Georgia and seeing a man named Johnny playing the fiddle. The Devil offers Johnny a golden fiddle if he plays the fiddle better than he can, but if Johnny loses, he’ll lose his soul. There are two fiddle performances in the song, first being The Devil’s with his band of demon musicians, and lastly Johnny’s, which is a mix of four old folk songs. Johnny then wins, and he receives the golden fiddle.
