Make up has evolved over the years in many ways.
In the 1920s bright pinks and reds were popular for blush,along with thin, arched eyebrows. Dark, smoky eyeshadows in shades of black, brown, or purple were common. Eyeliner was used to outline the eyes and smudged to create a smoky effect. Deep reds, burgundies, and plums were the most popular lip colors, with smooth pale skin achieved with matte powder.

Moving on to the 1930s powder-based foundation was in style, along with thin eyebrows with a high arch achieved through plucking or shaving. Eyeshadow was lightly applied in colors like blue, pink, green, or gold shaped to create a wider “pear” shape. Mascara was applied heavily to both upper and lower sets of lashes for long, slim eyelashes. Eyeliner was used to define the lash line..

In the 1940s a smooth matte look was achieved with liquid foundation set with a light dusting of powder. Blush was often in powder form in a rosy shade, brows were medium-thick and arched, eyeshadow was subtle in pastel or matching eye-color shades and mascara was applied to both top and bottom lashes. A thin line of black eyeliner was applied on both the upper and lower lash lines to define the eyes.

The 1950s saw a smooth matte often pale complexion in style, with well-defined eyebrows shaped with a soft arch. Eyeliner was winged or in a “cat-eye” style, eyeshadow was typically in a subtle matte shades like grey, blue, or brown, and mascara was generously applied to add fullness. Lips were often a bold red shade, and blush was rosy and pastel toned.

In the 1960s thick eyeliner was applied to the upper lash line often winged false lashes were essential for a dramatic look. Light and frosted eyeshadows like pale blue, mint or white were popular foundation was light and pale blush was softly applied in pastel pinks or peaches, and lips were often nude or light pinks. The 1980s brought vibrant eyeliners, neon eyeshadows and colored mascaras makeup and lipstick colors like fuchsia, plum and bubble gum pink applied to lips for a lifted and dramatic look.

In the 1990s a matte base and powdered face were popular, thin, defined, and sculpted eyebrows cool-toned eyeshadows, smudged black eyeliner, and lipstick in hades of matte, brown, or mauve, with a darker lip liner

The 2000s featured full coverage foundation layered with bronzer and matte blush, thinner shaped and defined brows, shimmery pastels and frosted eyeshadow, glossy lips defined with dark lip liners and a touch of glitter on the cheekbones

The 2010s trended towards matte full- coverage foundation brows filled with a dark shade, heavy layered concealer and powder used to “bake” warm toned eyeshadow with winged eyeliner, dramatic false lashes, blush on the cheekbones, and a bold color or nude lip with a liner to over- line

Finally in the 2020s moisturizer and primer are applied before lightweight, light coverage foundation, lightly concealed spot, bronzer and blush applied to the cheek, highlighter on the high points of the face, brows are full and brushed dark colored lipliners are popular
