The Dickens Festival

The+Dickens+Festival

The Dickens Festival, also called The Dickens Christmas Fair, is a convention-like gathering that attempts to recreate a Victorian setting in inspiration from the English novelist and social critic Charles Dickens. Many of these festivals are Christmas themed to reflect on Dickens’ famous story, A Christmas Carol.

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was the most popular British novelist of the victorian era, creating some of the most iconic characters in festive literature. Ebenezer Scrooge, for example. His story is remembered as a Christmas classic and has been portrayed in many different ways.

In general, the festivals include people costumed in Victorian fashion, musical and theatre performances, food and drink vendors, and festive handmade art of all sorts. It is open for anyone to attend. This year is the 86th year of the festival, and it takes place from November 18th to December 17th.

There are also lectures and discussions on literature and historical topics as part of the events, as well as costumed entertainers impersonating characters from Dickens’ novels, and even some historical figures such as Queen Victoria.
